Memorial Group Visit Squadron to Say Thanks

Members of the Hertfordshire Airfield Memorial Group (HAMG) recently visited the cadets and staff of 1239 (Broxbourne & Hoddesdon) Squadron to formally thank the Squadron for its' continued support to the group at the annual Hunsdon Memorial Day.

The HAMG have raised funds and erected memorials upon the two wartime airfields of Hunsdon and Sawbridgeworth and each year, a formal Memorial Day is held at each airfield to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice during the Second World War.

In particular, the Hunsdon Memorial Day honours the 126 airmen who lost their lives while flying from or serving at RAF Hunsdon during the Second World War and, as in previous years, 1239 Squadron attended the 2012 Memorial Day and paraded in front of over 300 people including relatives of some of the 126 airmen commemorated on the memorial, personnel from four Commonwealth Air Forces; the Royal Air Force, the Royal Canadian Air Force, the Royal New Zealand Air Force and the Royal Australian Air Force as well as members of the RAF Association and the Royal British Legion.

Cadets and staff of 1239 Squadron being presented with a cheque from the Hertfordshire Airfield Memorial Group as a token of their appreciation for the Squadron's continued support for the annual Hunsdon Memorial Day.

Denis Sharp and Michael Dent both who are members of HAMG, and both Roy Howe and Fred Sewell, who are members of the Nazeing Branch of the Royal Air Force Association visited the Squadron and thanked the staff and cadets for their continued support, and Denis Sharp presented Flight Lieutenant Mark Richards, OC 1239 Squadron, with a donation as a token of the groups' appreciation towards the Squadron.
